2010 Women's History Tea

On Saturday, Mar. 6, the Friends of the Yuba County Library will present the seventh annual Women’s History Tea, which this year will be an official program of The Big Read Yuba Sutter now underway in the two-county region. This year’s theme, “Mark Twain’s Women,” reflects the book selected for the area’s first Big Read, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.”

As in past years, local amateurs are invited by the Friends of the Library to portray interesting women from history during an afternoon tea. Guests enjoy a traditional fare of sweets and savories as the character players bring to life women who helped shape history in some way. This year, one man -- Mark Twain himself -- will be added to the cast and act as emcee. Women he knew or wrote about who will be portrayed at the Tea include warrior saint Joan of Arc, the unsinkable Molly Brown, temperance activist Carrie Nation, author Louisa May Alcott, Christian Science leader Mary Baker Eddy, First Daughter Alice Roosevelt Longworth, children’s author Mary Mapes Dodge, opera singer (and Twain’s daughter), Clara Clemens, and right from the book, Tom Sawyer’s own Aunt Polly.

In order to meet ticket demand, the Tea has moved to a larger venue and this year will be held in the Parish Hall of St. John’s Episcopal Church, 800 D St., Marysville. Doors open at 12:30 and, to paraphrase Mr. Twain, “the trouble begins at one.”

The event is open to the public; tickets are $12 per person and are on sale now at the front desk of the Yuba County Library, 303 Second St., Marysville. Members of the Friends of the Library will receive a $2 discount but they MUST show their membership card to the Front Desk in order to purchase the tickets for only $10 each. Alas, there are no exceptions to this requirement. If you have misplaced your membership card, please contact one of the Co-Chairs to purchase your ticket (see next paragraph for their phone numbers).

There is open seating but groups can make table reservations by calling one of the event’s co-chairs, Mary Rooftree, at 749-9986, or Kathy Seder, at 741-1624.

Because of the need to provide advance numbers to our excellent caterer, Kathy Smith, TICKETS WILL NOT BE SOLD AT THE DOOR.

All proceeds from this fundraising event will go to support the operation and resources of the Library’s California archives, a unique repository of artifacts and information about local, regional and state history and heritage.
